Reflection

This week we had a lot of readings and several videos plus we had to meet with our mentors to discuss our action research study topics.  After watching the videos and completing the weekly readings in our Dana text many new topics and wonderings started to pique my interest.   Acquiring so much new information about action research questions made it difficult to choose just one action research topic.  My mentor and I discussed the possibilities for our campus and decided we needed to scale the list down to a reasonable number of topics to consider.  Some of the topics considered were eliminated because they were too broad and it was difficult to narrow them down to be a focused and feasible question. Other topics only benefited a few stakeholders.   I knew I really wanted to focus on who would benefit from my plan so my final choice was one that would benefit the most key stakeholders on my campus.  I also wanted to be able to extend the study further, if possible.  I chose an action research topic related to bus discipline.  It is a topic I feel is important to many stakeholders students, teachers, bus driver, administrators, community members and last but certainly not least, parents.

  1. I also felt that this week's assignment was beneficial in helping me to come up with new topics for action research. I think you chose a great action research project, especially since it will benefit so many people. I look forward to hearing the results!

  2. I like the fact that you looked at the stakeholders and how many would benefit for your research. Not only is our topic important but who can benefit and use our research findings is important.

  3. I like that so much thought was put into your project. My site supervisor, I'm afraid, doesn't know much about action research and so she hasn't been much of an influence on my topic. I hope all goes well. Hopefully we can all gain some useful tips or even an entire plan for bus discipline from you :)

  4. As I have told you before, what a great idea thinking outside of the box. Im always so dedicated to classroom, classroom, classroom that I always forget the other aspects of the education system. In addition, it feels like you are in constant communication with your site supervisor which is so great. Like Keri, I too really dont have such great feedback from mine. Main reason why is its because its his first year a principal (he has been assistant principal for various years) and so he is adjusting to that as well.

  5. Bus discipline seems to be a problem everywhere! I work in a 3A size district, which means we have students of all grade levels on one bus at a time. Bus behavior got so bad last year that we even went to have bus monitors on certain routes. I will be following your research closely and can't wait to see what you come up with!

  6. Very interesting...I know the district that I am in has pre-k through 12th grade all on the same bus just like Lisa talked about. I know that we have had problems on the bus in the past but one question that popped into my head after reading this is do you have any students that require an aide to be with them all day in classes and if so are they required to ride the bus with the student? I know also, in the past we have had to have a staff member ride the bus home with certain kids who could not behave on the bus.

  7. Scott, we have over 45,000 students in my district so we have many many buses. My campus is and Intermediate campus which has 2 grade levels (one of 6 intermediate campuses) and we have over 25 bus runs. The only students who have aides with them all day are the Life Skills and TLC classes...there are actual teachers and aides with them all day. Those students have their own bus. I do know the administrators have to ride certain buses from time to time when behavior gets bad on a particular bus. The last day of school we have teachers/coaches/admins riding on every bus.

  8. It was hard for me to narrow it down because I kept looking into the future to make sure that my topic would cover all the bases. I agree that there are a lot of topics that are so broad! My assistant principal was instrumental in helping me make the final choice! I like your topic and think you will have a wealth of information. There is not a school out there that won't benefit from your findings!
